Pigs

The monthly sale of all classes of pigs saw an entry of 80 forward, meeting plenty of interest for all types. The fortnightly sale of prime pigs had an entry of 31 forward in which all were eagerly bid for selling to a market average of 118p/kg. The trade was topped at 164p/kg or £138 from HM Prison Wymott with Saddle Back Gilts. Cast sows sold to a top of £80 from DM Richardson of Penrith. A small number of weaners and stores on offer with just in the region of 40 were met with plenty of interest especially for well-bred white and Pietrain cross weaners. They sold to a top of £45 from BR Harrison of Windermere

Prime Lambs

There was a larger entry in the region of 1200 prime lambs forward for this week’s sale, selling better then maybe expected following on from reports sales that morning, with an overall market average was 172p/kg. Good quality Beltex and best conformation lambs sold in excess of the 200p/kg mark, selling to a top of 210p/kg from WS Burrow of Silverdale with Beltex lambs to 205p/kg from J Holmes and Son of Ulverston, with others selling around the 190p/kg mark. The trade twice topped at £100 for Suffolk lambs from JA & VM lamb of Conder Green and Texels from TE, JS and SA Carruthers of Underbarrow. Heavy weighted lambs weighing fifty kilograms plus selling towards the £90 mark. The Mule trade twice topped at £73 for 43kg lambs.

Cast Sheep

A larger entry of just short of 650 cast ewes and rams forward. There was a large quantity of lean ewes forward with a shortage of big fit ewes in the market today. Plenty of interest ring side from buyers looking for grazing types of ewes as well. The trade saw best ewes sell in excess of £100, topping at £112 for Zwartable ewes from E Robinson of Brigsteers and Charollais ewes to £100 from S & B Capstick of Old Hutton. Mule ewes sold to a top of £76 from AW Crowe of Witherslack with strong meated Mule ewes around the seventy pound mark, but a shortage of strong Mules with a large proportion being leaner ewes today. A small entry of goats in the market today met plenty of interest selling to a top of £78.
